Since its inception in 1994, Biolea has gained a high reputation in gourmet and health food markets all over the world as one of the very few companies dedicated to a “slower” method of producing the highest quality olive oil with all its nutritional benefits intact, and with an emphasis on environmental issues and sustainability.
Our olive mill has all the architectural elements of the Cretan building tradition, and was designed and built to accommodate local and foreign visitors throughout the year. Our visitors learn about Cretan tradition in olive oil production by seeing it for themselves during the winter production season from the mezzanine of the olive mill which provides a bird's eye view of the entire olive oil production process. For the summer visitor, a short documentary is screened on the large-screen in the mezzanine. We conduct olive oil tasting and appreciation at our tasting bar, and estate products may be purchased on site. The road to the mill is accessible by car and bus, and there are ample parking facilities. The tour of the mill is free of charge. A programmed tour of Biolea Estate olive mill can also be tailored to fit various preferences. It can range from one to three hours in duration and can include: a tour of the factory, documentary presentation on olive oil production, olive oil tasting and appreciation, a visit to the olive orchard, or, after pre-arrangement, a buffet with Cretan specialty foods and/or Cretan cooking demonstrations.
In addition to individual tourist and tourist groups, we receive visitors from Greek and European schools and universities, we present our work to chefs, food writers and journalists from around the world and to international film crews working on programs about food and olive oil. Globally-viewed productions such as “Planet Food” and “Discovery Channel” have come to our mill specifically to film Biolea and traditional olive oil production.
The agrotouristic side of our work is by far the most rewarding because it allows us to pass on our knowledge about olive oil to the public, but also because our visitors' comments and encouragement are invaluable to our efforts.
Individual visitors or groups should call or e-mail us to make arrangements for their visit. |
